Why are contemporary artists and the work they make important?
Artist as Observer and Communicator
Contemporary artists find ways in which they can express how they feel about these things visually. This ability to convert ideas and thoughts into visual things (art) is something that is important to any society.
Without artists who are constantly looking for new ways to experiment, think, reflect and re-evaluate, we would not be living in such an advanced society.
The artist’s ability to imagine the unimaginable and to think the impossible is and has always been a very important and central role to the advancement of a society.
Contemporary artists are great thinkers. Artists have very unique and different attitudes, approaches and understandings towards the world. They often have the ability to operate to the peripheral of established attitudes and ideas, constantly observing and critiquing, what is happening in the world and why it is happening.
The artist’s role is to produce artwork that asks people to ask questions about who we are and why we are here.
A good way to think about why contemporary art is so important is to look at the question the opposite way around. Instead of asking ‘why?’ try and ask yourself, ‘what if there was no contemporary art?’ Imagine a world that did not have any creative activities or people. Imagine what a building would look like (would there even be buildings), imagine what cars would look like and the list goes on. The planet would potentially be a very grey, bland and boring place.
If artists had not endeavoured to question, probe and investigate throughout the centuries new ways of thinking and doing, just imagine what it would be like. Creativity in all its guises is important and affects every one of us.
We, as collectors need to support these types of people. Remember we get something into the bargain as well, for example the pleasure of owning beautiful landscape photography.
It is important to remember art can be interpreted in a multitude of different ways. There is never a right or definitive interpretation. Art is designed to generate debate and discussion and will also mean something different to each and every one of us. That’s the exciting thing about collecting and owning art.
