Public and Private Fine Art Galleries

Publicly Funded fine Art Galleries
Publicly funded galleries including the following ;Tate Galleries in London, Liver pool and St. Ives; Camden Arts Centre in London; the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham; Open Eye in Liverpool; The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead; Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle; Site Gallery in Sheffield.

Generally speaking the majority of a public galleries annual income comes from the government directly or through an organisation called the Arts Council. On occasion publicly funded galleries go into partnership with major corporations who often sponsor temporary exhibitions; an example of this is Unilever sponsoring the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London

University Galleries
Many universities have galleries that show interesting and diverse programs of contemporary art and photography. University galleries often gain funding from a combination of different sources; directly from the university itself; Art Councils; private benefactors or corporate sponsorship. Here are some links to some very well respected university galleries. John Hansard Gallery Southampton; University of Hertfordshire Galleries; Foyer / James Hockey Gallery at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design Millais Gallery at Southampton Institute; Norwich Gallery, Norwich School of Art and Design.

Commercial art galleries
Commercial art galleries approach the idea of art from a very different angle or perspective than publicly funded galleries whose main endeavour is to display work and educate. Ultimately the whole idea behind a commercial art gallery (like any other business) is that it exists to make money and as much as possible. Often commercial art galleries work very closely with a hand full of artists that have been carefully chosen and nurtured over a period of years. Commercial galleries do this in order to develop and build a market and collector base for their artists work thus maximising the profit they can gain. Often commercial galleries are completing to get artists to sign to them so that they can begin to profit from their creative activities. The artist also can gain great benefits from working closely with a commercial gallery. A good gallery can be responsible for helping the artist gain exhibitions and generate income so that they can continue developing and producing work. The artist can become consumed by the pressure of making work finding themselves in a position where it is impossible to progress or develop because they are so caught up in the commercial gallery system having to produce the same type of work that has made them popular and commercially successful. Commercial Art Galleries such as Alison Jacques Gallery in London; Anthony Reynolds Gallery in London; Corvi-Mora in London; Gagosian Gallery in London, Los Angeles and New York; Lisson Gallery in London. All are experts in identifying and helping artists to develop and grow economically and creatively.

Artist Run Spaces
Artist run spaces are often studio and exhibition spaces that have been setup or are run by artists. These types of space have a significant role to play in the support of emerging contemporary artists at a formative stage of their career. The majority of these types of spaces are public/private partnerships where the artist’s gains a space to work in normally at subsidised rates.

How does the work on the Buynewart website relate to current contemporary art practice?
Artists working at the forefront of creative endeavour and investigation tend to have a leaning towards the most recent and most current techniques and processes. This could include photographic practices, both traditional and digital, video and audio and ideas based. Buynewart have a diverse understanding of what is happening in the contemporary art world and are constantly in search of new and emerging areas of thought and activity. All of the artists represented by Buynewart have been carefully selected for their commitment and attitude to the serious production of their work. All of the artists shown here are directly involved in the international contemporary art world and have established exhibition profiles often with their work being collect by major museums and galleries as well as private collectors. We have chosen artists that have global perspectives and attitudes and have an ability to operate internationally and not just exist within one given context or ‘scene’.
