Limited Edition Art and Open Editions

What does a limited edition mean?
Limited edition print means an artists work printed in a particular size using a particular print process and in an edition size of generally between 5 to 250. When you buy a limited edition print the print number will be indicated on the print and on a certificate. For example if the print number is 10/150 it means you are the 10th person to own that specific print and there will only be another 149 people on the planet that will own that particular edition. This is really something when you think about the world’s population being over 6 billion. Clearly this makes the artists work very exclusive and special. You will most likely find as the edition sells its value will increase. And if the edition sells out its value will considerably increase. You will find that initially limited edition prints are often cheaper than original art works but when the entire edition is sold out can often be worth much more an if it were just a one-off.

All of the buynewart limited edition prints are signed by the artists using our label and stampTM artist signature system. Each print will have the edition number, artist signature and unique reference number. The unique reference number will be linked to our online print authentication system enabling the collector to verify that the limited edition print they own is genuine. Each print will also come with a certificate of authentication.

What does open edition mean?
Unlike limited editions, open editions do not have a limit on how many can be sold. However this does not stop it being something that is visually compelling and will always look great in any environment. For this reason open editions are less expensive because they are less exclusive. An open edition print will not become as collectable as a limited edition print. Either way limited edition or open editions are great ways of owning contemporary artists work at highly affordable prices.
