Why should I collect Contemporary Art?
Contemporary artists are like very clever thinkers, and you can buy their very clever thoughts in the form of works of art, of course filmmakers, musicians and writers are also thinkers but anyone can buy a book or CD. If you buy a work of art you’re the only person who can own that very clever thought at anyone time.
Ben Lewis, Why Do People Buy Art, Channel 4 Television.
Remember contemporary art is about communication often, however, not exclusively, through visual means. If an artist’s role is to make people think differently through communicating new and different ideas they need their work to reach as broad and diverse an audience as possible. Artists need to continue developing, evolving and communicating so have to develop ways in which they can make money but at the same time continue making contemporary art work. This is where the role of the art collector is of fundamental importance.
